For this edition of Throwback Thursday...it's #8... I am going back to 1995. The second quilt I ever made. I made it for my son, Alexander, who was 12 at the time. He was a Chicago Black Hawks fan back then, hence the red, black and white colour scheme. It's a double Irish Chain, made with the strip piecing technique. I hand quilted it diagonally in each direction through the chains and quilted a large shamrock in the open areas. It was hard to quilt, because of my lack of experience, I used a percale sheet for a backing. The tight weave was difficult to stitch through nicely. Also, I always thought it needed more quilting but after 21 years of use and lots of washing, it has stood up very well.
Lots of memories in this quilt. I made this during my three years of living in Saint John, NB. It was there that I joined my first quilt guild, the Marco Polo Quilters Guild. I learned so much and made lifelong friends. I think of those days whenever I look at this quilt.
Hope you had time today to do something quilty!
It's so fun hearing the memories that come with quilts of the past! With one of my crocheted afghans, I remember working on it in the ER when I took my husband. Everybody was asking me about it while we were there, made for a more interesting trip! Lol.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful quilt and a lovely story to go with it. Sheeting is lovely and wide so was tempting to use but we live and learn! It's a design that I have always fancied having a go at - well maybe one day LOL. xx
ReplyDeleteI love looking at people's quilts from the past and the stories. It is amazing how looking at a quilt can bring us back to the times when it was made. Too bad we can't see a close up, but it looks great.
ReplyDeleteI still love the double Irish chain. This is a wonderful quilt and still bringing warmth and love.
ReplyDeleteWonderful quilt with lots of great memories ☺
ReplyDeleteMy first quilt, as I've likely said before, was a Double Irish Chain. And it was made not so long after you finished this one! I still love this pattern. I made this pattern again recently and it really does stand the test of time. Thanks for linking up with Throwback Thursday @ A Quarter Inch from the Edge!
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice memory! My second quilt was a double Irish chain, too! I made it for a friend who was seriously injured in a hit and run back in the mid 80's. That's when I became a serious quilter! Thanks for sharing! XO
ReplyDeleteI still find it hard to believe that you were a hand quilter. You are amazing at FMQ. I've never made this pattern.
