"Lizzie and Me"

I have been super motivated lately.  Motivated to quilt up some older pieced tops that have been hanging around for far too long.

" Lizzie and Me"  a collaboration.

The centre Lone Star or Bethlehem Star (not sure which is proper name)  was pieced back in the 60s (correct me if you can date these fabrics)  I am going by the fact that it matches a baby quilt that was made for my brother-in-law and he was born early 60s.  My brother-in-law's Great Aunt Elizabeth "Lizzie" Brown of Kincardine, Ontario was the maker.  It was given to me to "do something with".  When I received it, it was in bad shape stuffed into a plastic grocery bag all wrinkled and ragged and stretched out of shape.  I threw it in a corner for many years and decided last year to try and salvage it so I pressed and starched the star into submission, replaced a few tattered pieces, added the background pieces of muslin, added a small border to corral it all together into some kind of straightness.  Then just this past week I free motion quilted it with a large meander stitch in the background and wavy lines in the star and DONE! It turned out just beautiful.  The vintage aspect is totally there.  It is so soft and cuddly.

80" x 80"

It will be given to my niece.  I am her aunt on her mother's side of the family and Lizzie Brown is her great great aunt on her father's side.  I think Lizzie would be thrilled that I finished up her UFO and that it will be used by her great great niece and her children, her great great great niece and nephew.  They are all quilt lovers so I know it will be loved.

Have you ever finished up a quilt for someone who is no longer with us?  It sure is a nice feeling.
